More than 45
years after its founding, the Peabody-Lynnfield Weekly News, formerly
The Shoppers' News, has grown to become one of the largest weekly newspapers
in Massachusetts and the largest town newspaper north of Boston. Although
much has changed since 1957 the mission remains essentially the same:
to deliver local news with integrity.
REQUESTED
PERIODICAL
During
the summer of 2002, the Peabody-Lynnfield Weekly News changed the class
of mail under which it is mailed to more than 20,300 households and businesses
each Thursday to a requested periodical.
This means every
household in Peabody and Lynnfield that receives the Weekly News wants
it delivered each Thursday. Our readers took the time to fill out a
card and mail it back to us requesting free home delivery of the paper.
More than 60,000 readers rely on the Weekly News for its coverage of
local news events, insightful politcal scene updates, complete school
system information, thorough local sports coverage and schedules, as
well as wedding and birth announcements, classified listings, legal
notices and real estate transactions. The paper is also audited by
Certified Audit of Circulations (CAC).
In addition
to being mailed to more than 20,300 households and businesses throughout
Peabody and Lynnfield, the Weekly News is also available for sale at
several retail locations.
COMMUNITY
NEWSLEADER
The Weekly News employs a full-time staff of three editors and a reporter
to cover the news, sports and events of the day. The Weekly News reports
extensively on daily affairs at town and city halls, police and fire departments
and the myriad board and council meetings that make up municipal life.
In addition to
covering the school and government happenings, the Weekly News is interested
in the smaller events that affect residents. Each week, readers turn
to the Weekly News to browse births and engagements, read next week’s
school and elders menus and see what special events are planned at
the churches and temples.
DEADLINES
While the Weekly News has a full-time staff, it also relies heavily
on announcements and events sent in by its readers. Deadline for editorial
submissions is every Monday at 3 p.m. for the issue to be delivered in
homes on Thursday.
The Weekly News
invites readers to share their thoughts through letters to the editor
that are signed by individuals. Letters must be legible and typed or
printed and include the name of the writer, the writer’s home
community, and the daytime phone number of the writer. Letters should
not exceed 300 words in length unless approval of a lengthier letter
has been received in advance from the editor. Longer letters will be
edited for length or not printed.
Letters and announcements
should be addressed to: Robert Curtin, Editor, Weekly News, P.O. Box
6039, Peabody, MA 01960.
Also, special
seasonal sections are run throughout the year, including Bridal Guide,
Summer Camp Directory, Health and Fitness and a four-page High School
Graduation pull-out section.
